The Brewery at The Flower Pots Inn, Cheriton
Forge Design Studio have recently completed the submission of the Planning Application for the extension and alterations of the existing Brewery Building at the Flower Pots Inn, in the village of Cheriton, east of Winchester.
We were kindly introduced to the project and client at the beginning of the year by now retired architect and good friend Paul of Masser Associates. They had worked alongside the client on a variety of projects over the years including the construction of the original Brewery building itself in 1992 and subsequent extensions.
The owners of The Inn and associated Brewery are committed to retaining traditional brewing processes ‘on site’. Part of the success of the Brewery and the Flower Pots brand has been the direct link with the adjacent historic Inn a Grade II Listed Building. The Flower Pots site has been involved in brewing since the 1850’s and the ethos of the business is directly attributable to the local environment in a rural setting, close to the source of the River Itchen and is at the heart of the community.
The design brief was to improve and update the brewery building as demand and popularity of Flower Pots beer has increased significantly. This has resulted in the existing building being intensively used over the last thirty years, and now requires a complete overhaul.
The proposals aim to provide additional floor area to create a better safe working environment to modern standards and to deliver the potential for an increase in brewing capacity and product development in tune with beer production market conditions.
Situated in the South Downs National Park the setting and visual impact have been key considerations as part of the design process.
The scale, massing and general arrangement of the brewery extension have been very carefully considered whilst maintaining the approach to the building and views across from the main pub garden. Integration in the landscape and the creation of an attractive setting and a positive visitor experience has been a key part of the design.
We are delighted to have been involved in this exciting and unique scheme working alongside a new project team and look forward to seeing the proposals through to completion.
Ps - they do a lovely lunch!!!
