Sunshine Garden Centre

The Site

The site, which is home to Sunshine Garden Centre, was originally the location of an outdoor swimming pool, known as the Bounds Green Lido, which was constructed in the mid 1930’s. Following many years of popular use by the community, falling numbers led to its closure by Haringey Council in 1988.

The brief set by our clients, a local developer, involved the comprehensive redevelopment of the site to bring the retail facility up to date to suit the 21st Century, reflecting the change in shopping patterns whilst embracing the increasing importance of the home leisure market.

The intention is to improve the accessibility and visual experience of the Garden Centre by creating a more impressive kerbside showcase for its core businesses – namely the plants and home barbeque/outdoor cooking experience. With the surge of interest caused by the pandemic the future of outdoor living – gardening, eating relaxing and playing – seems bright. The new re-imagined Sunshine Garden Centre will be well positioned to capture the market.

The use of the site will become completely integrated with the adjacent park. This will provide many mutual benefits for users of the park and shoppers at the Garden Centre

The remainder of the site will provide 60 residential units will complement the facility and will help facilitate the development which in turn will provide a mix of sizes and tenures to assist local needs. Affordable housing will be provided at 40% in line with policy which will equal 24 units.

Working alongside the Landowner and North Made based in Manchester, the aerial CGI visualisations provide the opportunity to truly appreciate the benefit of developing this desirable site.
