Michael was the lead contact when the practice were appointed by John Laing Infrastructure to provide planning strategy, design and architectural advice. He led the preparation of a master plan for an integrated urban regeneration scheme of up to 700 high-density dwellings, commercial, health and leisure at Vicarage Road, Watford, as part of a bid to become The Watford Health Campus joint venture partner. The master plan was based on careful analysis of the site and the surrounding context, and aimed to reinterpret traditional building forms distinct to the neighbourhood in a contemporary architectural form.
The extreme topography and riverside location gave rise to the form and structure of the master plan proposals. The vision was to deliver a cohesive, integrated and vibrant new community that would aid regeneration in and around the Football Stadium and General Hospital. The bid team came second having scored highly in the design categories but lost out on the Commercial content.
