This project is currently under construction having been the subject of the largest single grant award in the country from the Government Homelessness Change Programme. Phase 1 creates 79 new bed spaces to provide safe, secure accommodation for the young people of Cheltenham. Michael led the design process through the preparation of a comprehensive site masterplan for the development into detailed negotiations with the Heritage Officer at the Local Authority in respect to the interiors of the Listed Building. The site and existing building complex was extremely complicated having experienced a random series of extensions and additions over a number of decades.
The design peels back the layers to create a new facility with a shared courtyard which introduces light and ventilation into the centre of the site. The proposals linked to the original listed villa to the front of the site whilst creating a new contemporary image to the side and rear wings. The scheme was endorsed by the South West Design Review Panel following review and received all the relevant consents by a unanimous vote.
