CPD ’24 _ Scotland

A field trip to Scotland for the team kicked off our CPD for 2024!

Despite a 4 hour fog delay in Bournemouth on Monday morning we managed to pack a lot in to a short time. First stopping off point was the V&A in Dundee – unfortunately our delayed arrival meant that we missed the organised building tour but still gave us time to explore the building and enjoy the exhibits.

Changes made to the foyer space and the re-location of the café were interesting to see, as was the presence of the original architectural model. The building was viewed against a flat grey sky with a dead calm River Tay as a backdrop.

We headed over to St Andrews for our overnight stop and enjoyed a great night out in the Auld Grey Toon.

Tuesday dawned with a very unseasonal beautiful blue sky. A visit to site to see our residential project at Moonzie Mill – great for our team to see the site and appreciate the progress on the timber frame. The sequence of spaces, views and positioning on the site was considered and thankfully endorsed by the team!!

From Balmullo we headed to the East Neuk of Fife, focusing our visit on Crail. One of Mikes’ all-time favourite places – thanks to Wikipedia for the following history lesson!!

“In 1610, the eastern pier was described as "new foundit" (newly built); however, by 1707 it was called "old and ruinous", requiring rebuilding.[14]

The west pier was rebuilt in 1828 by Robert Stevenson. This work incorporated the crane on the southwest corner which lifts timbers into slots to seal the inner harbour.[8][17]

The structure of the inner walls of the harbour features a highly unusual vertical coursing of the stones.”

The timeless quality of the buildings and relationships between them – forming such an appealing townscape was a subject of First Year Architecture sketching trip for Mike back in 1979! Glad to report that it is still a beautiful place to visit.

After too short a time we were back to Edinburgh and home to Southampton on Tuesday evening – safe to say we packed a lot in to a short space of time!!
